Frequently asked questions
How can I get started with your services?
To get started we will schedule a free initial consultation that I call a "meet and greet" where we get to know each other better and I can get acquainted with you pet(s) as well. During the meet and greet we can go over any concerns or questions you have and also set up a pet care schedule that works best for you. You can message me here to get started!
How can I schedule an appointment with you?
You can schedule an appointment by emailing me directly at jolie@portlandpaws.org or you can text/call me at 971-757-0144.
What neighborhoods do you currently provide services in?
I am located in the Cedar Mill neighborhood and currently provide services in Northwest Portland, West Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tanasbourne, and the surrounding neighborhoods. I'm always expanding so please reach out if you have a question about coverage in your area.
How does overnight pet sitting work?
I offer two different overnight packages that can be customized to your pet care needs.
The first overnight package is $60 and covers one dinner visit/walk/feeding and an overnight stay. The start and end time can be customized but coverage is generally from 7pm to 7am.
The second overnight package is $90. This service includes one mid-afternoon visit/walk/feeding and one evening visit/walk/feeding and an overnight stay. The first visit will be in the afternoon around 2pm with me returning at 7pm and staying till 7am. These times can be adjusted as needed.
All overnight visit pricing is the same for cats and dogs. For homes with more than 2 dogs there will be an additional surcharge of $20 per additional dog. There is no surcharge for multiple cats.
If you need extra pet sitting coverage we can add additional morning or afternoon visits as needed. Add-on visits are priced the same as dog walking and drop-in visit pricing, which can be found under the services section of the main page.
All overnight stays can be customized and include services like watering plants, light housekeeping, litterbox cleaning, checking the mail, taking out the garbage, and much more.
All overnight stays include play time, exercise, feeding, watering, and medications. I can also provide brushing and grooming as needed. And of course lots and lots of snuggles and love! ❤️
How do I provide access to my home for pet care visits?
Access to your home is entirely up to you and what you are the most comfortable with. Many of my clients use lock boxes with a spare key or they have electronic access key pads set up. Whatever you decide I will always make sure your home is safe and secure when I'm there. Many of my clients like me to text before and after a visit to make sure everything is safe and I'm very happy to provide that reassurance. The security of your home is very important to me and I will always treat it with the highest care and standards.
Do you work holidays?
I sure do! My schedule can fill up fast though so I usually recommend trying to book at least a month in advance for holiday coverage. Please note that there is a $20 surcharge fee added per day for holiday bookings.
What happens if there is bad weather?
As a native Oregonian I'm very comfortable walking in heavy rain and even snow. I also have chains for my car and I'm able to drive in the snow in most cases. That being said if the weather is bad enough that it would be hazardous to drive in we can always reschedule your dog walking service in that case. Or, if we're still able to drive but your dog doesn't like walking when its super wet out, we can instead have an indoor play date so that your dog still gets attention and a little exercise. We can discuss an inclement weather plan at your initial consultation.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
I require at least 24 hour notice for cancellations. Clients are eligible to receive a full refund if they cancel more than 24 hours before the beginning of a scheduled service. If less than 24 hours is given, then they will receive no refund. Please note that as a small business last minute cancellations can really damage the ability for my business to survive, so I just please ask for my clients to be considerate and try not to cancel last minute.
Are you insured?
Yes, I have pet care insurance through https://www.petcareins.com/.
Do you have references?
Absolutely! Please reach out to me by email and I can provide you with a list.
What happens if my pet gets sick or has an emergency while they are with you?
During your initial consultation we can discuss a pet emergency plan that works best for you and that you are most comfortable with. I always ask that my clients provide me with their vet contact information in case something should happen. For a true pet emergency (choking, poisoning, etc) I usually recommend rushing the animal to the nearest emergency clinic. I like using VEG since they have amazing clinics and wonderful, kind staff members. You can learn more about them here: https://www.veg.com/locations/oregon
Are you able to administer medications for my pet?
Absolutely! I have a ton of experience in this area and I'm able to provide pills, fluids, or any other treatments your pet needs. We can discuss your pets medication and treatment needs during your initial consultation.
Are you trained in Pet First Aid and CPR?
I sure am! I renew my certification regularly through the wonderful instructors at https://www.trailblazingtails.com/.
What kind of training and certifications do you have?
For the last 20 years I have taken dozens of online and in person classes to expand my knowledge in animal behavior, training, and care. I hold several certifications through https://www.instinctdogtraining.com/ and https://apdt.com/.
Are you available last minute or same day?
Sometimes! My schedule is usually booked a week in advance but please feel free to reach out to me if you have an emergency situation. I can sometimes help out last minute and I am very happy to do that if I'm able.
What kind of pets do you care for?
I primarily work with dogs and cats. I have no breed restrictions and will work with anyone who is in need of pet care services.
Do you offer referral discounts?
Absolutely! I love referrals from my amazing clients and offer 10% off any single service for each referral.
How do you prefer to be paid?
For new clients, pet care visits are required to be paid on the same day of the first service. For established clients we can offer flexible terms such as bi-weekly or monthly payments. I currently accept most forms of secure online payments such as PayPal and Venmo. I also accept cash. I'm currently unable to accept checks or ACH payments due to long processing times. I also plan on having a payment portal set up very soon, so stay tuned for details!
Do you offer pet boarding?
This is a new service that I'm offering since I currently don't have any pets of my own which makes it easier to care for client's pets in my home. If this is something you are interested in, reach out to me and we can see if it's a good fit. I live in the Cedar Mill area and have a very clean and safe home and I'm happy to care for any pets that are comfortable traveling and being around other dogs that I'm walking.
Do you offer dog training services?
I don't currently offer pet training but this is something I plan on adding to my services in the near future. I am however able to incorporate any training you are currently doing with your pet into my visits. For example, if you hire me as a dog walker I can practice training techniques on our walk or during the visit. We can make a custom plan for your pet during our initial consultation and adapt it as needed.
Do you work alone or with a team?
I work alone and don't have plans to hire additional help. I prefer being a solo operation because I have high standards and want to be sure that your pets are getting the absolute best care possible. Since I work alone you also always know who is caring for your beloved pets.
Are you hiring?
I am not hiring at the moment and do not have plans to hire anyone in the near future.
Do you have experience working with prong collars or choke chain collars?
I have a strict policy against any training technique that could cause mental or physical harm to an animal. Therefore I unfortunately cannot work with dogs that are subjected to these types of collars. Prong collars and choke chains are harmful to dogs because they can cause physical injuries like tracheal and esophageal damage, nerve damage, blindness, and neck sprains, as well as emotional distress. They are designed to be painful and they don't teach dogs what they really need to learn. If you have a dog that pulls there are several safer training methods that you can use. For dogs that pull or are hard to control, I also highly recommend using a properly fitted harness instead since it prevents damage to the dogs neck and makes walking these types of dogs so much easier. Remember, dogs are people pleasers and they aren't pulling because they want to be bad. This is why I always recommend positive reinforcement training methods. Dogs are natural explorers and pulling usually means they aren't getting the natural stimulation that they need. Regular, consistent walks and outdoor play time can go a long way helping to reduce leash pulling. A properly fitted harness will also make managing your dog easier and safer for both of you. ❤️
